Stora Sundby Castle, Medieval castle in Eskilstuna Municipality, Sweden.
Stora Sundby is a castle situated on the shores of Lake Hjälmaren with a striking Neo-Gothic design completed in the middle of the 1800s. The building features a complex structure with multiple towers and numerous windows arranged across its substantial exterior.
The castle began as a fortified structure in the 1200s and was fundamentally redesigned during the 1800s under Count Carl De Geer's stewardship. Architect Peter Frederick Robinson led the transformation, completing the Neo-Gothic rebuild in 1848.
The castle incorporates numerical symbolism with its architectural elements: four towers for seasons, twelve turrets for months, and 52 rooms representing weeks of the year.
The castle serves as a private residence for the Klingspor family and access is limited for visitors. Guided group tours are available during the warmer months, and a café with lake views welcomes guests.
The estate encompasses extensive forest and farmland that support a wide range of wildlife across the grounds. The land is managed through controlled hunting and conservation activities that help maintain the local animal populations.
