Stora Wäsby Castle, Manor house in Upplands Väsby, Sweden
Stora Wäsby is a manor house with a two-story stone main building designed in Rococo style, featuring balanced proportions and detailed ornamentation throughout. About ten additional protected buildings surround the main structure, forming a complete noble estate complex.
Construction began in the 1760s under architect Carl Hårleman and was completed by Jean Eric Rehn after Hårleman's death. The De Geer family established the estate as a family property in 1730, making it an important example of Swedish noble landholdings.
The De Geer family shaped this place as their home and business center over many generations, leaving traces throughout the rooms you can still see today. The estate reflects how Swedish nobility lived and worked in the countryside.
The estate is accessible only by appointment and guided tour, so advance booking is necessary before your visit. It is best to contact ahead to arrange a tour and learn about visiting conditions.
The grounds feature a 17th-century Baroque garden that underwent major renovation in the 1920s under architect Isak Gustaf Clason. This garden offers a quieter contrast to the formal Rococo building and shows a different period of design history.
