Lipnica Castle, Castle ruins in Zgornja Lipnica, Slovenia.
Lipnica Castle is a ruin located on elevated terrain above Lipnica Creek in Zgornja Lipnica. The site features defensive ditches that define the perimeter, along with stone walls and two towers built for defense.
The castle was first recorded in 1263 as Castrum Waldemberch and served as an administrative center for the Ortenburg nobility. It remained under their control for centuries, managing their territorial holdings in the Upper Carniolan region.
The ruins have inspired local storytellers and artists over the centuries, becoming a place where people connect with regional legends and folklore. Visitors today experience the castle as a symbol of the valley's historical identity and cultural memory.
A marked circular walking trail of about 5 kilometers from Radovljica leads to the ruins with clear signposts and information boards along the way. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain when exploring the castle site itself.
Local legend tells of Margaret Teck, who allegedly poisoned Count Friderik III with an apple and then transformed into a serpent wearing a golden crown. This dark tale adds a layer of mystery to the abandoned site that captures visitor imagination.
