Ljubljana City Municipality, Administrative region in Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana City Municipality is the administrative unit that covers Slovenia's capital city and its surrounding neighborhoods. It extends from wooded hills in the north to flatter land in the south, with the Ljubljanica River running through the center.
The area was settled in ancient times and grew into a regional center during the Middle Ages under the name Laibach. It became the capital of independent Slovenia in the 20th century.
The old town follows a medieval street layout, and narrow lanes pass by small shops and cafés set inside old stone buildings. Walking through these streets gives a sense of scale that feels very different from the rest of the city.
The city center is easy to get around on foot, and most points of interest are close to each other. Side streets tend to be quieter than the main roads, especially during the busiest parts of the day.
The Dragon Bridge, built around 1900, is one of the oldest concrete bridges in Europe, yet it is remembered almost entirely for its dragon statues rather than for its engineering. The four copper dragons at its corners were meant as decorative details but have since become the most recognized image of the city.
