Ribnica Castle, Renaissance castle in Ribnica, Slovenia
Ribnica Castle is a fortress in central Ribnica consisting of two defense towers connected by a passage. The site now houses a museum, open-air theatre, concert area, and a Cultural Park displaying works by Slovene sculptors.
First mentioned in 1264 as Castrum Reuienz, the castle passed between different owners including the Auersperg and Rudež families over several centuries. After World War II, significant reconstruction took place to adapt its remaining structures for modern use.
The castle now serves as a museum displaying local craftsmanship traditions and regional history that shaped this town's identity. Visitors can explore exhibitions that reflect how people here lived and worked over generations.
The site is centrally located and easy to reach on foot from anywhere in town. The grounds offer open spaces suitable for walking, exploring the towers, and enjoying outdoor cultural events.
The castle remained largely in ruins for many decades before undergoing careful restoration in the 1960s to become a cultural hub. This transformation allowed historic structures to merge with modern artistic installations in the surrounding park.
