Leopoldov Prison, High-security prison and former fortress in Leopoldov, Slovakia.
Leopoldov Prison is a high-security facility housed in a former fortress that occupies extensive grounds in northwestern Slovakia. The complex contains cellblocks, administration areas, workshops, a dining hall, and medical services.
The fortress was built in 1665 under Leopold I to defend against Ottoman advances in the region. In 1855 the structure was converted into a prison and became Slovakia's largest detention facility.
The prison maintains medical facilities with four general practitioners, a dentist, a psychiatrist, and specialized treatments for tuberculosis and diabetes.
Access for visitors is limited due to security protocols and requires advance permission. Information about possible tours or viewing areas is available at the entrance during operating hours.
During the 1989 Velvet Revolution the facility experienced severe civil unrest that sparked discussions in the Slovak National Council about temporary closure. These events marked a turning point in how security and prisoner treatment were addressed within the institution.
