Fiľakovo Castle, Medieval fortress in District of Lučenec, Slovakia.
Burg Fileck is a medieval castle ruin set on a volcanic hill in the District of Lučenec, in southern Slovakia. The site features several layers of fortification walls, stone bastions, and the remains of a Renaissance palace built within the older defensive core.
The castle was built in the 13th century on a naturally defended hilltop, serving as a military stronghold along the southern borderlands of the Kingdom of Hungary. Over the following centuries it was expanded and rebuilt several times, until repeated sieges in the 17th century left it in ruin.
The name Fileck comes from the Hungarian word for a corner or angle, likely referring to the shape of the hill on which it sits. Local visitors often come here on weekends to walk the grounds and take in the view over the surrounding lowlands.
A footpath leads up from the village below to the castle grounds, and sturdy shoes are recommended because the surfaces are uneven throughout. The layout is straightforward, with the main walls and bastions visible across the hilltop.
A cannonball from a 17th-century siege is still partly lodged in the wall of one of the pentagonal bastions, visible to anyone who walks close. It is one of the few physical traces left by the military confrontations that ended the castle's active use.
