Fazao Mafakassa National Park, National park in Kara Region, Togo
Fazao Mafakassa National Park is a large protected area spanning across two regions with mountain ridges, dense woodland, and open grassland in different parts. The terrain varies significantly from elevated plateaus to lower forest zones.
The site was officially designated as a national park in 1975 through the combination of two previously separate protected forest areas. This merger created the larger conservation zone that exists today.
Communities living in and around the area maintain customary lifestyles that have coexisted with the landscape for generations. Their involvement in stewardship programs shapes how people interact with the land today.
Access to the park works best through guided tours arranged with the park management office before visiting. Walking trails form the main way to move through different areas and observe the landscape.
The park is home to hundreds of bird species that either nest there or pass through during migration seasons. This makes it a critical stopover point for birds traveling across the region.
