Phichit, Province in lower northern Thailand
Phichit is a province in lower northern Thailand crossed by the Yom and Nan rivers. These two waterways create fertile soils where rice and lotus grow widely.
The region was settled in 1058 during the Sukhothai period by Phraya Kotabongthevaraja and first called Sa Luang. It later developed into an important hub in the northern kingdom.
Every September, boat competitions unfold on the Nan River as local teams show their rowing skills. These races follow religious rites centered on a revered image kept at Tha Luang temple.
The province divides into twelve administrative districts, with the main hospital and government offices located in Mueang Phichit district. For travelers, this district serves as the most practical starting point to find basic services.
The area hosts numerous freshwater crocodile farms, and it gained fame through the epic poem Krai Thong by King Rama II. In this work, a mythical crocodile king is said to have lived in local waters.
