Phuket International Airport, International airport in Mai Khao, Thailand
Phuket International Airport is an airport in Mai Khao, Thailand, serving both domestic routes and connections across Asia and beyond. The facility operates with two separate buildings, one handling arrivals and departures within the country and the other managing travelers coming from abroad.
The runway was built during World War II by military forces and used for operations throughout that period. After the war, the government converted the facility and opened it for civilian flights in 1976.
The terminals feature Thai architectural elements and provide travelers with local food establishments serving regional dishes from southern Thailand.
The facility sits about 32 kilometers north of Phuket Town center and can be reached by taxi, shuttle bus, or rental car. Arriving travelers find counters for transport and information just after baggage claim.
The main runway runs parallel to the coast and aircraft approach from the sea, so arriving passengers often see the Andaman Sea during descent. On clear days, several small islands off the coast are visible from the tarmac.
