Sukhothai Historical Park

Sukhothai Historical Park is an archaeological site containing ruins of ancient temples, monuments, and royal structures scattered across a vast area. The entire complex is surrounded by earthen ramparts that once enclosed this former capital city.

This site served as Thailand's first capital during the 13th century before it was eventually abandoned. The Ayutthaya Kingdom later took control in the late 14th century, shifting the center of power to a new location.

The temples blend Buddhist and Hindu architectural traditions through their carved details and dome structures. Visitors can observe how these two religious influences shaped the artistic expression visible in the stonework throughout the site.

The site is best explored by bicycle, as it spreads across multiple zones that can be visited individually or as a complete tour. Plan for substantial time to wander through the ruins and prepare for sunny, warm conditions.

An associated museum houses artifacts from the period when Thai script was developed under King Ramkhamhaeng. This writing system became a defining achievement of the era and remains in use today.
