Chiang Mai International Airport, International airport in Saraphi District, Thailand
Chiang Mai International Airport is a major commercial aerodrome in Suthep, northern Thailand, equipped with a 3,100-meter (approximately 10,200-foot) runway and two separate terminal buildings for domestic and international destinations. The facility handles numerous daily flight movements and features processing halls with shops, service areas, and waiting lounges for passengers across all travel classes.
The facility started in 1934 as Suthep Airport, initially serving postal delivery to remote mountain areas in the north. During World War II, military units expanded the site for combat operations and supply flights, before it was gradually converted into a civilian aerodrome after the war ended.
The name comes from the northern Thai city it serves, linking the region's economic center with the capital and international destinations through regular flights. Passengers experience a mix of northern Thai architecture and modern facilities in the terminals, while local shops and restaurants present regional cuisine.
The airport sits about 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) southwest of the city center and can be reached by taxi, shared shuttle, or songthaew within minutes. Extensive parking areas accommodate short-term and long-term stays, while various transport options depart directly from the terminal buildings.
The airport grounds house the Tango Squadron Wing 41 Air Museum, displaying 28 historic aircraft from different eras, including remains of an American World War II Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk fighter. Visitors can view the collection during museum opening hours and gain insight into the region's military aviation past.
