Chatuchak Weekend Market, Weekend marketplace in Chatuchak district, Thailand

Chatuchak Weekend Market is a weekend marketplace in the Chatuchak district of Bangkok, Thailand, covering roughly 35 acres (14 hectares). The stalls spread across numbered sections, each grouping certain types of goods like clothing, plants, furniture or food.

The marketplace opened in 1942 and relocated several times before arriving at its current site near Chatuchak Park in 1983. The move formed part of a government initiative to reorganize trade areas in Bangkok.

The name Chatuchak comes from the surrounding district, where vendors have filled weekends with crowded aisles and quick sales calls for decades. Visitors today see sellers arranging goods in narrow corridors while shoppers thread through stacks of textiles, ceramics and spices.

The market opens on weekends between 6 AM and 6 PM, and most visitors reach it through Mo Chit BTS Station or Chatuchak Park MRT Station. Early morning hours are less crowded, making it easier to walk through the narrow lanes.

A clock tower in the center of the grounds was built in 1987 for King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th birthday and serves visitors as a landmark. Many use the tower to find their way between sections.

Photogenic Spots in Bangkok: Temples, Markets, and Siamese Architecture

Bangkok offers photographers a wide variety of subjects, from religious heritage to contemporary urban spaces. The Thai capital hosts several major historic temples such as Wat Arun, established in the 17th century, with its central prang reaching 79 meters (259 feet) and decorated with porcelain fragments, as well as the Grand Palace, a royal complex from the 18th century covering 218,000 square meters (54 acres) and home to the renowned Emerald Buddha. Wat Pho, with its 46-meter (151-foot) gold Reclining Buddha, completes this series of religious sites that have shaped the city's architectural identity. Beyond temples, Bangkok features diverse locations suitable for various photography styles. Markets like Chatuchak, with 15,000 stalls on weekends, offer authentic scenes of local life. Green spaces such as Lumphini Park help document urban nature across 57 hectares (141 acres). Modern shopping districts like Asiatique The Riverfront and Siam Paragon demonstrate the city’s contemporary growth. This collection includes accessible sites that reflect the multiple facets of Bangkok.
