Xiaoyoukeng, Geothermal site in Yangmingshan National Park, Taiwan.
Xiaoyoukeng is a geothermal site in Yangmingshan National Park where steam continuously rises from multiple fumaroles and yellow sulfur deposits mark the rocky landscape. The area contains numerous hot springs threaded by walking paths that connect various viewpoints and cooking pools.
The site originally served as an operational facility for the CPC Corporation, which harnessed the region's geothermal resources for energy production. Over time, the location evolved into a destination where visitors could observe the geothermal phenomena firsthand.
The name refers to the hot springs that have drawn visitors for many generations. In designated areas, local people cook eggs and vegetables in the natural heated pools as a longstanding practice.
Bring warm clothing and rain gear because weather changes rapidly at the elevation of about 805 meters and humidity is often high. Wear sturdy shoes with good traction since the ground can be slippery from moisture and steam.
Multiple hot springs here reach water temperatures of about 104 degrees Celsius, making them among Taiwan's hottest. Visitors can watch how the extreme heat warps the air and creates distinctive mineral deposits in the pools.
