Zmiiv, Administrative city in Chuhuiv Raion, Ukraine
Zmiiv is a city along the Southern Railway line in Kharkiv Oblast, situated at an elevation of 93 meters among farming areas and industrial sites. The city serves as a transport hub with local industries focused on paper manufacturing and machine building.
The settlement was founded between 1180 and 1185 and became a fortified outpost by the 1550s to defend against Tatar raids from the southern steppes. This defensive role shaped the city's early development.
The city's name comes from Ukrainian snake mythology, and you can see references to this tradition in local stories and the ancient defensive structure called the Serpent's Wall.
The railway station offers regular train connections to Kharkiv and other regional destinations. Visitors can easily access the city by rail and explore both the town and surrounding areas.
The Zmiiv Paper Mill, built between 1891 and 1893, was among the first major industrial facilities in eastern Ukraine. This early factory shows how industrialization began in this region and drove the city's growth.
