Bilsk Hill fort, Archaeological site in Poltava Raion, Ukraine

Bilsk Hill Fort is an archaeological site containing a settlement that spreads roughly 35 kilometers along the Vorskla River. The area is protected by earthen ramparts and moats, and was divided into three separate sections connected by defensive structures.

The settlement was built between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC as a Scythian fortified center in a strategic location along the river. Over time it became an important hub for this ancient culture in the region.

The people who lived here practiced farming, raising livestock, and working with metal while maintaining trade contacts with ancient communities near the Black Sea. These economic activities shaped the daily rhythm of the settlement and reveal how its inhabitants connected to the wider ancient world.

The site is located in an open area that can be explored on foot, but visitors should wear sturdy shoes and prepare for changing weather conditions. Check locally about active excavation areas before visiting, as these may affect where you can walk.

The fortification features defensive ramparts reaching up to 12 meters in height, showcasing remarkable engineering from the Scythian era. The landscape also contains numerous burial mounds, including the particularly large Skorobir kurgan, which highlights the settlement's importance to the region.
