Popov Castle is a Gothic Revival residence in the town of Vasylivka, consisting of a four-story main building with five towers and several side wings. The complex also includes stable buildings and several observation points distributed across the entire grounds.
General Vasily Popov began construction of this grand residence in 1864 and hired architect Alexander Ageyenko to design the project. Following the October Revolution of 1917, the use and fate of the complex changed dramatically.
The Popov family was a prominent landowning aristocracy who used the castle as a symbol of their power and as a repository for art and collections. The rooms still show traces of this refined lifestyle through their furnishings and decorations.
The grounds today function as a museum with exhibitions on local history, ethnography, and World War II displayed in the preserved sections. Visitors should allow plenty of time to explore the different wings and towers throughout the complex.
The entire castle was built from locally sourced materials, including an observatory on the fourth floor equipped with a functioning telescope. This feature reveals the scientific interests of the original owners and their ability to incorporate technical innovations into their residence.
