Putyvl

Putyvl is a city in Sumy Oblast in northeastern Ukraine, situated along the Seym River. The town developed around historical landmarks and religious structures that have shaped its layout over time.

The city was first documented in 1146 and held strategic importance as a fortress between the principalities of Chernihiv and Novhorod-Siverskyi during the Kievan Rus period. It remained significant for regional defense and political control across the following centuries.

The Movchansky Monastery displays architectural elements from the 17th century, including the Nativity Cathedral with influences of Muscovite design.

The city contains several religious buildings worth visiting, including the Church of St Nicholas from the 1730s and the Saviour Cathedral dating to 1617. Walking through town helps you encounter these structures and get a sense of the place.

During World War II, the city became a center of resistance when local partisan groups led by Sydir Kovpak launched operations against German occupation. This period left a lasting mark on the city's identity.
