Samarskii lis, Protected forest area in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine.
Samarskii lis is a protected forest area located along the banks of the Samara River in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine. The area is made up of mixed woodland, floodplain sections, and riverbanks that together form a continuous natural corridor.
The forest was granted protected status by the Ukrainian government in response to growing pressure from industry and farming in the surrounding region. This decision reflects a broader effort to keep what remains of the river floodplain forests in eastern Ukraine.
The forest is a place where school groups and nature researchers come to observe local plant and animal life up close. Along some paths, signs point out rare species that grow or live in this part of the river valley.
The forest has marked paths that are easy to follow even for first-time visitors, though some sections near the river can be muddy after rain. Going in the early morning or in spring gives the best chance of seeing wildlife and fresh vegetation.
Some of the oak trees in this forest are several hundred years old, making them far older than most trees found in the surrounding region. Their dense, gnarled canopy creates conditions for species that do not appear in younger woodlands nearby.
