Дома со шпилем, Landmark buildings in Luhansk, Ukraine.
The Spire Buildings are two identical five-story brick structures standing at the intersection of Sovetskaya and Chelyuskintsev streets, each crowned with a pointed tower. Both have distinctive red stars mounted on top and ground-floor retail spaces that give the street level its character.
These buildings were constructed between 1953 and 1955 under designs by the State Design Institute of Aviation Industry as part of Soviet urban development. They emerged during a period when the government invested in reshaping city centers across the country.
Local residents call these buildings 'Shpilki', and they represent the Stalinist architectural style that was common across the Soviet Union during the 1950s. They shape the city's character and hold meaning for many people who grew up nearby.
The western building once housed the city's first department store, while the eastern one contains retail shops today. The wide street in front offers good views of both buildings and their architectural details from various angles.
Between these two buildings lies Heroes of the Great Patriotic War Square, featuring a fountain and a monument made of cranes that visitors often miss from the street level. This quiet space offers a moment of reflection in the middle of the urban intersection.
