London Zoo, Zoo in Regent's Park, London, England
London Zoo is an animal facility at the northern end of Regent's Park in the City of Westminster. The site covers roughly 15 hectares and houses thousands of animals in a range of enclosures and climate-controlled buildings.
The facility was founded in 1828 by the Zoological Society as the first scientific collection of its kind in the world. Animals from the royal menagerie at the Tower were brought here, and the public was admitted from 1847 onward.
The zoo takes its name from the Zoological Society that founded it as a center for animal research and observation. Visitors today walk through habitats designed to show how different species live, and families gather around feeding areas to watch keepers interact with the animals.
The facility typically opens around 10 in the morning, and tickets can be bought online in advance. The entrance is located on the outer circle of the park, allowing visitors to walk through different themed sections.
The reptile house from 1849 was the first building of its kind anywhere and gave the public its first look at how cold-blooded animals were kept. Four years later the first public aquarium followed, opening underwater worlds to visitors.
