The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest ranking judicial body in the in U.S. federal judiciary.
Established by the U.S. Constitution in 1789, it has the ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases.
Its decisions have shaped American society and policy, handling landmark cases involving civil rights, privacy, and freedom of speech.
Composed of nine judges, known as justices, who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
Only one Justice in history, Samuel Chase, has been impeached by the House in 1805, but was acquitted by the Senate.
