The Battery, Public park in Manhattan, New York City.
The Battery is a 25-acre public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City facing New York Harbor.
The area was named the Battery in the 17th century for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years to protect the settlement behind them.
The Battery Conservancy, founded in 1994 by Warrie Price, has undertaken and funded the restoration and improvement of the once dilapidated park.
The Battery is often teeming with tourists due to its proximity to the Statue of Liberty ferry and other downtown attractions.
The Battery hosts an urban farm, free outdoor fitness classes, and also features SeaGlass Carousel, a one-of-a-kind carousel housed in a spiraling nautilus shell.
