Castle Clinton, originally known as West Battery, is a circular sandstone fort located in Battery Park, Manhattan.
Built from 1808 to 1811, it was used as a fort during the War of 1812.
It has served various purposes over the years, including an entertainment center, immigration station, and currently a national monument.
Today, it serves as a departure point for visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Castle Clinton has had many identities including being America's first immigration station (predating Ellis Island), where more than 8 million people arrived in the U.S. from 1855 to 1890.
