Whitehall Building, Historical skyscraper in Lower Manhattan, US.
Whitehall Building is a Beaux-Arts office and residential tower in Lower Manhattan standing approximately 79 meters tall across 31 floors. The structure extends along West Street near Battery Park, with residential apartments occupying the upper levels while office spaces fill the lower and middle sections.
Architects Clinton and Russell designed this complex between 1908 and 1910 as part of Manhattan's commercial growth during that era. The project represented a period when Lower Manhattan was expanding and modernizing its business center.
The building takes its name from Whitehall, the historic British government seat, reflecting its role as a major administrative and business center. Visitors can observe how it stands among modern structures while maintaining its classical architectural character.
Located at 17 Battery Place, the building is easily accessible by public transit with several subway and bus stops nearby. Visitors can admire the exterior at any time and explore the surrounding Battery Park area.
The foundation was built with specialized engineering techniques to support the structure on landfill material along the Hudson River. This foundation solution allowed the building to remain stable on this challenging underground terrain.
