26 Broadway, Renaissance Revival skyscraper in Financial District, Manhattan, US
26 Broadway is a 31-story skyscraper in Renaissance Revival style in Manhattan's Financial District, standing about 158 meters tall. The facade is made of Indiana limestone with double-height windows and features a distinctive stepped pyramid top.
Standard Oil commissioned this as a corporate headquarters in 1884 on the former site of Alexander Hamilton's home. A major expansion was completed in 1928 that shaped the building's current form.
The building shows how large companies expressed power through architecture in the early 20th century, with classical details that remain visible today. The pentagonal shape and ornate facade reflect the desire to stand out from other office buildings in the area.
The building sits right next to Bowling Green park and is easy to reach with several subway stations nearby. The interior is equipped with elevators and offers well-organized office spaces.
The building's apex features a decorative cauldron symbol that references Standard Oil's origins in petroleum production. Most visitors miss this detail even though it represents the entire business that once occupied the building.
