The building was constructed between 1929 and 1931 by architect Ralph Thomas Walker and replaced an earlier insurance building. Its completion occurred during New York's period of rapid financial growth.
The Red Room lobby features intricate mosaic murals by artist Hildreth Meière that celebrate wealth and creative expression through detailed tilework. People moving through this space encounter bold artistic statements at every level, from floor to ceiling.
