American Surety Building

American Surety Building, Neoclassical skyscraper at Pine Street and Broadway, Manhattan, US.

The American Surety Building is a neoclassical skyscraper with 26 floors that rises at the corner of Pine Street and Broadway in Manhattan, reaching 103 meters high. Its granite facade features classical architectural elements, while seven elevators serve the office spaces and retail shops like Duane Reade occupy the ground level.

The building was constructed in 1896 and pioneered the use of steel framing and caisson foundations. These techniques marked a turning point in skyscraper construction and demonstrated how modern methods could make buildings taller and more reliable.

The building displays a three-part facade designed like a classical column with base, shaft, and capital. This concept was adopted by many later towers in the city and continues to influence how skyscrapers are designed.

The building is accessible by subway and located in an active business district with good transit connections. Visitors can admire the classical architecture from the street or explore the entrance lobby to see the details of the granite facade up close.

Construction required groundbreaking techniques where workers labored in pressurized metal chambers with piped oxygen until reaching bedrock for the foundation. This demanding method was necessary to establish a stable base beneath Manhattan's surface.
