SeaGlass Carousel, Aquatic-themed carousel at The Battery, United States
The SeaGlass Carousel is a ride with thirty glowing fish figures that rotate, rise, and descend on four separate rotating platforms. The figures sit inside a glass and steel pavilion that looks like a transparent water tank.
The ride honors the first New York Aquarium, which operated at Castle Clinton from 1896 to 1941. This reference connects today's experience to an important chapter in the city's past.
Set designer George Tsypin combined theatrical elements with classical music compositions by Mozart, Debussy, and other composers to create an underwater experience.
Access is available year-round, and each ride lasts about three and a half minutes. The operation is straightforward and suitable for visitors of various ages.
Unlike traditional carousels, this ride has no center pole because electric motors hidden beneath the floor power the fish figures. This hidden mechanical system allows the spinning and lifting movements to happen without any visible support.
