The Helicoidal Skyscraper is a proposed tall building in Manhattan with three overlapping sails that spiral around a central trunk. The form follows a golden spiral pattern and creates a dynamic structure within the urban landscape.
Italian architect Manfredi Nicoletti designed this concept between 1968 and 1974 as a planned business center at the southern tip of Manhattan. The project was intended to reach a height of approximately 565 meters.
The structure's design drew inspiration from mammalian anatomy, incorporating biological principles into its innovative architectural approach for urban development.
The spiral design significantly reduces wind pressure on the structure. The central shafts contain interconnected cylindrical elements that house technical systems and vertical circulation.
The project uses steel-reinforced cables running along the outer surface to optimally distribute tension and loads. This system minimizes the structural mass needed while maximizing static efficiency.
