Dover Air Force Base, Military air base in Dover, Delaware, United States
Dover Air Force Base is a military installation in Dover, Delaware, operating the Department of Defense's largest aerial port with a fleet of heavy transport aircraft. Two paved runways serve daily civilian flights and military cargo operations moving troops and equipment around the world.
A municipal airport began construction in March 1941 south of Dover. After the Pearl Harbor attack, the airfield rapidly shifted to military use and received its current name in 1948 honoring a fallen Delaware senator.
The mortuary facility on the base conducts dignified ceremonies for fallen service members. Families and units gather for transfer rituals that reflect military traditions of mourning and respect.
Visits require advance clearance and identification checks at the main gate. Public access is restricted, and photography follows military security guidelines throughout the installation.
The installation hosts the largest heavy cargo aerial port and handles one-fifth of the nation's strategic airlift missions. Aircraft depart on scheduled routes reaching more than one hundred countries and maintaining supply lines across continents.
