Mount Vernon, Inner suburb in Westchester County, United States
Mount Vernon is a suburb in Westchester County in New York State, located north of the Bronx and covering roughly 11 square kilometers (4.4 square miles). The settlement is divided into several sections with different appearances, including an urban core with shops and residential areas on higher ground with single-family homes.
Families from Connecticut founded the settlement in 1664 as part of the colonization of the Eastchester region. The place gained village status in 1853 and was incorporated as a city in 1892.
The settlement takes its name from George Washington's Virginia estate and was adopted in the 19th century. Residents today live in neighborhoods with distinct characters, ranging from quiet residential streets to active commercial corridors along the main thoroughfares.
Visitors will find a public library with digital services and programs that is part of the regional library system. Most facilities are located along the main streets and are easily accessible by public transport from the Bronx or other parts of Westchester County.
The settlement experienced economic growth of over twenty percent between 2000 and 2006, making it one of the fastest growing communities near New York. This pace attracted new residents and businesses to the area and changed the appearance of several neighborhoods.
