High Point, Mountain summit in Sussex County, United States
High Point is the highest natural point in New Jersey, reaching about 550 meters above sea level. It sits within a state park that encompasses hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and recreational facilities across the mountainous terrain.
The site was established in 1923 when Colonel Anthony R. Kuser and his wife Susie donated their property to the state. This gift launched the creation of a public recreation area on this mountaintop.
The Olmsted Brothers from Boston designed the landscape of High Point State Park, following their father's legacy in landscape architecture.
Access is available through Route 23 in Sussex, with parking areas near the main entrance and walking trails of varying difficulty. Conditions are best during daylight hours, especially in clear weather when distant views stretch across state borders.
A tall stone monument crowns the summit as a memorial to war veterans and serves as the park's most recognizable landmark. From this structure, visitors can observe the Delaware River Valley and surrounding regions when weather permits.
