Lansing

Lansing is a residential village in Cook County, situated in the southern suburbs of Chicago, featuring tree-lined streets, single-family homes, and neighborhood shopping areas. The community includes schools, parks, and local services distributed throughout its neighborhoods.

The settlement began in 1843 when August Hildebrandt established the first residence in the area. The community took its name from the Lansing family, who arrived and contributed to its early development.

The population of 29,076 residents represents diverse backgrounds, with German, Polish, Irish, Dutch, and Italian ancestries forming the foundation of the community.

The municipal office on Ridge Road handles resident services and local permits for those who need them. The village spreads across neighborhood blocks, making it easy to explore on foot or by car.

The village sits on the Calumet Shoreline, an ancient lakefront boundary that once marked the edge of Lake Michigan. This geological feature shaped the landscape and influenced how the area developed over time.
