Lincoln Tomb, Presidential tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, United States.
The Lincoln Tomb is a burial site at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield that houses the sixteenth president of the United States. A red granite obelisk rises above a rectangular base, with bronze figures of soldiers positioned at each corner.
Construction began three years after the president's assassination, funded by public contributions from across the country. Dedication ceremonies took place in 1874, with further work carried out in the early 20th century.
The burial room contains black and white marble walls with a gold leaf ceiling, while 36 bronze panels commemorate each state of the Union from Lincoln's time.
Access is via a staircase leading to the entrance below the tower, where visitors can enter the chamber. Opening times vary by season, with longer visits possible during summer months.
An attempted theft in the 19th century led to the remains being moved several times before they were finally secured. Today visitors often touch a bronze nose at the entrance, which has been polished smooth by years of contact.
