Amrita Club

The Amrita Club is a three-story brick building with marble columns located at the corner of Church and Market streets in downtown Poughkeepsie. The structure displays Colonial Revival architectural features with detailed stonework, a prominent entrance, and a raised basement level.

The club was founded in 1873 as an association for local businessmen and professionals in the area. The present building was constructed in 1912 and has remained a visible landmark in downtown Poughkeepsie ever since.

The building served as a gathering place where the city's wealthy business leaders met and conducted their affairs. Today, visitors can sense how social hierarchies were expressed through the formal layout and quality of the spaces.

The street-facing side of the building offers the best views of the architectural details and entrance. Located in the downtown area, it is easy to reach on foot and fits well into a walking tour of the city center.

The building stands as one of only two brick Colonial Revival structures in Poughkeepsie, making it particularly rare for the area. The raised basement level combined with the detailed marble surround of the entrance creates a distinctive architectural feature you won't find in many other local buildings.
