Black River Escarpment, Geological formation in Eastern Wisconsin, United States.

Black River Escarpment is a rocky ridge in Eastern Wisconsin that runs from Green Bay toward the south. It marks a natural boundary between Lower Magnesian limestone and Black River limestone rock layers, creating a visible rise in elevation across the terrain.

The ridge formed millions of years ago through ancient geological processes that shaped multiple rock layers. Early settlers discovered the formation and used its elevated position as a guide for establishing communities across the region.

Native American tribes valued the high ground along this ridge for surveillance and settlement. The elevated positions gave them advantages for hunting and monitoring the landscape below.

You can reach several viewpoints along the ridge through maintained trails that offer views of the surrounding landscape. The best time to visit is during dry weather when paths are easiest to walk.

The ridge runs parallel to two other major geological formations, creating a rare triple system of ridges across Eastern Wisconsin. This unusual alignment shaped the landscape in ways that continue to interest earth scientists today.
