The Broadway-Armory Historic District spans 194 acres, featuring over 1000 buildings that showcase residential wood-frame construction and commercial structures along Broadway and Westminster Street.
The district experienced substantial development between 1830 and 1910, with the Cranston Street Armory serving as a training ground for military units during the Civil War.
The Dexter Training Ground, donated by Ebenezer Knight Dexter, transformed from a military exercise field into a neighborhood park with a bronze statue and playground.
The National Register of Historic Places listed district contains walking paths with markers that guide visitors through the architectural evolution of Providence's west side.
The 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery Regiment, the first Black company from Rhode Island to serve in the Civil War, conducted training exercises at this location.
