Trinity Repertory Company, Theater company in Providence, United States
Trinity Repertory Company is a theater ensemble performing in a historic downtown Providence building with two separate spaces for different productions. The larger Chace Theater seats around 500 people, while the smaller Dowling Theater accommodates approximately 300 guests.
The ensemble began in 1964 at Trinity United Methodist Church before relocating to its current downtown home in 1973. The building itself was previously a vaudeville theater that was repurposed for the company's needs.
The company maintains one of the last permanent acting ensembles in the country, bringing both classical and contemporary works to audiences year-round. Visitors experience a living theater tradition that differs from the typical traveling production model.
The theater runs Project Discovery, an educational program providing live performances and workshops to student groups across three New England states. When planning a visit, note that the two performance spaces host different productions, so check ahead to see what is showing where.
The ensemble became the first American theater company to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland in 1968. This early international breakthrough helped establish its reputation far beyond its home city.
