Union Trust Company Building
Union Trust Company Building, Bank building in downtown Providence, United States.
Description
The Union Trust Company Building is a 12-story downtown structure with a steel frame and Classical Revival design elements at 170 Westminster Street. Its lower floors now hold business offices while residential apartments occupy the upper levels.
History
The architectural firm Stone, Carpenter & Willson designed this building in 1901 and expanded it in 1920 to support financial growth. The expansion nearly doubled its horizontal span along the street.
Culture
The banking hall on the ground floor displays elaborate decorative details, marble finishes, and rounded arch openings that reflect how financial institutions looked in the early 1900s. Visitors can still see the careful craftsmanship and materials chosen to show the institution's wealth and dependability.
Practical
The building sits at the intersection of Westminster and Dorrance Streets, making it easy to locate. Note that it is an active structure with private offices and residences, so interior access may be limited.
Did you know?
Stone pillars separate the ground-floor windows while decorative keystones crown the arched openings on the second floor. These architectural details come together to create a distinctive look that sets the building apart.
