Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building, Commercial bank building in Providence, United States.
The Rhode Island Hospital Trust Building is an eleven-story structure on Westminster Street in Providence with a limestone facade and marble ground level. The building now houses classrooms, administrative offices, a library, and a cafe that serve the daily needs of students and staff.
The building was constructed in 1919 and originally served as the headquarters of the Rhode Island Hospital Trust Company, a financial institution founded in 1867. Bank of Boston acquired the company in 1985, which eventually led to the building being repurposed for other uses.
The structure now functions as part of Rhode Island School of Design, housing the Fleet Library with 117,000 volumes and student dormitory spaces.
The building is centrally located in Providence and easily accessible on foot, with clear signage directing visitors to different areas such as the library and classrooms. Plan your visit during the school's operating hours and expect to navigate stairs and elevators.
The original Italian Renaissance banking hall on the ground floor was carefully incorporated into a modern library space during renovation. This combination allows visitors to see historical architectural elements alongside contemporary functionality.
