Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, Stausee in den Vereinigten Staaten
Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is a large natural area with a reservoir in Virginia near Roanoke. The reserve contains about 630 acres of water surrounded by nearly 12,500 acres of forest with over 45 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.
The reservoir was built in the 1920s when the city of Roanoke needed a dam for drinking water supply. Over the decades it was expanded and improved multiple times to serve growing populations.
The name comes from William Carvin, an early settler of the land. Today the place serves as a gathering spot where people connect with nature and mark the passing seasons through outdoor activity.
The area is open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM and requires a daily or annual pass. Visitors should know that swimming and camping are prohibited, dogs must be leashed, and anglers aged 16 and older need a state fishing license.
Since 2013 the water has hosted hybrid striped bass that have thrived and now reach 14 to 18 inches long. This fish species was deliberately introduced and demonstrates how the reservoir is actively managed to improve quality and diversity.
