Crocker County, Former administrative county in Iowa, United States
Crocker County was a former administrative division in Iowa that occupied the northern portion of what is now Kossuth County. The county comprised twelve townships with its administrative center located in Greenwood.
The Iowa General Assembly established this county in 1870, but the state Supreme Court reversed the decision just one year later. The reversal occurred because the area failed to meet the minimum size requirement set by the state constitution.
The territorial changes of Crocker County reflect the evolution of local government structures in nineteenth-century Iowa state administration.
This territory no longer exists as an administrative division after its dissolution in 1871, when its townships returned to Kossuth County control. Visitors interested in Iowa's pioneer history can explore the Greenwood area to understand the region's historical roots and early settlement patterns.
This short-lived county represents an unusual outcome where a newly created administrative division was invalidated by courts due to a constitutional requirement about minimum land area. Few other counties in America have been dissolved so quickly after their establishment due to such a technical constitutional violation.
