The 1st Military Region is a command center in northern Vietnam that oversees six provinces along the country's northeastern frontier. Headquartered in Thai Nguyen, it coordinates military operations across Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, and Bac Giang provinces.
The command structure formed in October 1945 during the early phase of the independence struggle. It took part in several armed conflicts, including the Indochina War, the Vietnam War, and the 1979 conflict with China.
The military region maintains specialized training programs for local forces, integrating regional defense capabilities with provincial military commands across northeastern Vietnam.
The headquarters includes several administrative departments, staff units, reconnaissance sections, artillery battalions, and two military hospitals numbered 91 and 110. Visitors typically cannot enter the grounds, as it remains an active military installation.
The region runs specialized border defense units that work alongside local militia forces to protect 391 kilometers (243 miles) of international boundary with neighboring countries. These units coordinate regular patrols and monitoring operations along the mountainous border sections.
