Hermagor-Pressegger See is a municipality in Carinthia positioned at the base of the Carnic Alps near the Italian border. The area spreads around Pressegger See lake and includes several settlements such as Tröpolach, Egg, and Görtschach in the lower Gail valley.
The parish of Saint Hermagoras was first documented in 1169 and received market rights in 1288. This status made the area the main settlement of the Gail valley and established it as an administrative and trading center.
The area is named after Saint Hermagoras and shows alpine traditions through its architecture and land use patterns. Local communities shape daily life through farming and traditional crafts visible throughout the valley.
The town sits conveniently between central Austria and the Italian border, making it a gateway for cross-border activities. Visitors find a mix of alpine village life and modern facilities such as shops and restaurants.
The municipality connects to the Italian town of Pontebba through Naßfeld Pass and hosts the largest winter sports resort in Carinthia. This cross-border link makes the area an international hub for skiing and mountain activities.
