Kasereck, Mountain summit in Schladming Tauern, Austria
Kasereck is a mountain summit in the Schladming Tauern that reaches 2,740 meters (8,990 ft) in elevation. It forms a natural dividing line between Göriachtal and Lessachtal valleys in the Salzburg region.
The peak was first documented as climbed by alpinist Hans Wödl, marking a significant moment in Austrian mountaineering history. This ascent reflected the growing exploration of this alpine region during the 1800s.
The summit serves as a landmark for shepherds working the surrounding alpine meadows. They have long used its position as a natural boundary for their pastoral activities.
The climbing route starts at Piendlalm and passes by Piendlsee lake situated at 2,033 meters (6,670 ft). From there, hikers follow the southwest ridge up to the summit.
The mountain reveals different geological periods in its rock layers, documenting millions of years of Alpine development. These natural geological records make the peak particularly interesting for earth scientists.
