Haimburg Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Völkermarkt, Austria
Haimburg Castle is a castle ruin situated on elevated rocky terrain near Völkermarkt in Austria. The stone walls frame views across the Carinthian landscape and allow visitors to explore the structure and condition of this medieval fortification.
The castle was first documented in 1103 as Huneburch and was held by the Counts of Heunburg until 1322. The change in ownership marked a significant turning point in the history of the site.
The ruins now serve as a venue for open-air theater performances, with the Heunburg Theater company staging summer shows here since 2011. Visitors can experience plays and cultural events surrounded by the old stone walls, blending entertainment with the historic setting.
The site is accessible via marked hiking paths with different routes depending on fitness level and experience. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and check conditions before visiting, as the terrain is uneven and can be steep in places.
Since 1990, a private initiative called Rettet die Heunburg has worked to stabilize and restore the remaining walls. Their efforts have preserved important structures that might otherwise have continued to deteriorate.
