Lentos Museum of Modern Art, Modern art museum on the Danube River in Linz, Austria
Lentos Museum of Modern Art is an art museum on the banks of the Danube in Linz, showing works in painting, sculpture, photography, and contemporary media. The building spans several floors and holds both a permanent collection and changing exhibitions.
The museum opened in 2003, taking over a collection that had originally come from Berlin and included works by Austrian artists from the early 20th century. That collection had been brought to Linz during the Second World War and only found a permanent home decades later.
The name Lentos comes from the Celtic name for Linz, connecting the building to the oldest layer of the city's past. Inside, visitors can find works by well-known Austrian artists such as Klimt and Schiele, which are part of the permanent collection.
The museum sits directly on the Danube riverfront and can be reached on foot from central Linz in a short walk. Allow at least two to three hours if you want to see both the permanent collection and a temporary show.
The building's facade is clad in glass panels that are lit from within at night, making it visible from across the Danube and from bridges nearby. This lighting changes the look of the building completely depending on the hour and the season.
