Musikverein, Concert hall in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria
The Musikverein is a concert hall in Innere Stadt in Vienna with several performance spaces. The main hall with its golden interior measures 48 meters in length and 19 meters in width and seats 1,744 people.
Emperor Franz Joseph granted the land for construction in 1863, and the Danish architect Theophil Hansen designed the building in neoclassical style. The venue opened in 1870 with a ceremonial concert.
The hall serves as home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and hosts the televised New Year's Concert every January. The golden interior with its classical caryatids and coffered ceiling has shaped the visual identity of Viennese orchestral tradition for generations.
Guided tours in English take place regularly, and concert tickets can be purchased at the side entrance near Karlsplatz station. The central location in the first district makes the building easy to reach on foot from many hotels and attractions.
The building houses six different performance spaces including the Brahms Hall and the Glass Hall, each with distinct materials and architectural solutions. The acoustics of the main hall benefit from the rectangular shape and wooden paneling, which create a warm and clear sound.
