U-Bahn Serfaus, Underground funicular transportation system in Serfaus, Austria
The U-Bahn Serfaus is a funicular in Serfaus, Austria, running through a 1280-meter tunnel below the village street. It links four stations from the car park to the cable car base and travels on an air cushion instead of traditional rails.
Operations started on December 14, 1985, after the local council restricted private car traffic in the village during 1970. The air cushion technology was chosen to handle the steep gradient and the particular geological conditions.
The system takes its name from the village itself and serves both locals and visitors as an everyday means of transport. Children use it to reach school while holidaymakers carry skis and luggage in the wide cabins.
The ride between all stations takes only a few minutes, and waiting times are usually short as the cabins run at regular intervals. Access to the system is via staircases and lifts that are also suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
This installation is the highest underground air cushion railway in the world and runs right through the rock beneath the village. The cabins float a few millimeters above the track and produce almost no noise or vibration.
